Help browser improvements

Ok, let's see how well it goes. As discussed on the mailing list. Tested on Linux, Mac and Windows. Startup times are a bit longer on Mac and Windows, but I think it's tolerable given the benefits. On Linux (Arch) it's as snappy as before. After launch the help browser always comes up instantaneously, on all platforms. All in all, I think it's a fair tradeoff.
