GSoC: Phase 2 general improvements

This merge request makes changes to .gitignore and the macOS building process, so simply make clean and then git add . will not accidentally introduce any garbage to the git repo.

For now, this will only benefit macOS because I only have a Mac available and it is too weak to run virtual machines. I will be testing on Windows and Linux machines once I can lay my hands on them.
